Why Our Public Schools Matter

THE HEART OF OUR COMMUNITY - WHY OUR PUBLIC SCHOOLS MATTER
A letter from the three Boone County Public School Superintendents

This week, together, we are celebrating NATIONAL PUBLIC SCHOOLS WEEK.

We encourage you to join us in celebrating our schools by thanking a public-school educator who has made a difference in your life or the lives of your children. We are proud to work alongside our hard-working faculties, staffs, administrators, and school boards to provide a world-class education for all citizens of Boone County, regardless of address or zip code.

While we compete in sports and activities, Western Boone Schools, Zionsville Community Schools, and Lebanon Community School Corporation are similar in many ways, and the most important thing we share is that we serve all students and families.

Our commitment to welcoming everyone is the theme that unites our three outstanding Boone County public school districts. Our collective strength comes from the many backgrounds and cultures we serve.

Public schools provide a wide range of opportunities for students and families. Here are just a few of the ways your public schools serve and support Boone County.

Your public schools:

  • Offer rigorous college preparatory curriculum preparing our students for the colleges of their choice.
  • Provide instruction in multiple world languages to prepare our students for participation and success in the global community.
  • Provide opportunities in the visual arts, music, and theater.
  • Welcome students whose first language may be represented by many different and unique dialects.
  • Provide high ability academic programming in each elementary school
  • Offer STEM curriculum including engineering, health sciences, and robotics.
  • Provide curriculum to build employability and lifelong skills such as personal finance, communication, and entrepreneurship.
  • Provide dual credit options and various work-based learning opportunities leading to desirable employment certifications.
  • Provide a robust continuum of special education services for individuals aged 3-22.
  • Provide an array of co-curricular and extracurricular activities allowing students to learn new skills and compete at the highest level.
  • Integrate public service, teamwork, and leadership into all aspects of our schools and activities.
  • Partner with the community in service to others.
  • Partner with hundreds of businesses, non-profit organizations, and government agencies to provide students with real word experiences in workplace learning and internships.
  • Maintain leadership development programs at all levels K-12.
  • Provide critical services such as transportation, food service, childcare, mental health supports, and important vision and hearing screenings.

We understand that students are more than a test score. Through our commitment to educate the whole child, we celebrate that each student is unique, special, and brings extraordinary talents and gifts into this world. We see our work as a community service as we help students grow and learn in a variety of ways.

Yes, our public schools represent some of the largest employers in our communities, but more than that, we are major drivers of economic growth and prosperity for a community and a county. Prospective businesses and residents looking toward Boone County as a potential place to call home will turn to the quality of the public schools as an indicator of an area’s desirability. As your public-school superintendents, we welcome that responsibility and opportunity. We believe that all our public schools reflect our unique communities, and we are bonded together in a set of core values and principles that put all students and families first.

It is our honor to serve our communities of Boone County.

Rob Ramey, Superintendent of Western Boone
